Lakshadweep is a group of islands located in the Arabian Sea around 200-300 km away from the coast of Kerala. The name of the Union Territory literally means ‘Thousand Islands’ (‘laksha’ – thousand, ‘dweep’ – island). Kavaratti is the capital of this Union Territory. Lakshadweep is the smallest Union Territory of the country. Malayalam is the language spoken by the people of this region except Minicoy where the people speak Mahl, a language spoken in Maldives. Lakshadweep is a hotspot for tourism. It has to be mentioned that one needs entry permit to visit this remote island. Coconut is the economically important crop of the island.
